Carraway Hospital Redevelopment

The redevelopment of the 48-acre site of the former Carraway Hospital takes a step forward as the City of Birmingham approved its rezoning request for a large mixed-use project.  Corporate Realty is developing this project north of the BJCC into office, retail, entertainment, hotel and residential space.

Becky Carpenter, development project manager at Corporate Realty, said “Our team has worked with city officials for more than four years to move this project forward and redevelop this property in a way that is good for the surrounding neighborhoods and for Birmingham overall. Carraway was an important part of the north Birmingham neighborhoods, and we look forward to helping to make sure it is brought back to life and will be something we can all be proud of again.”

BHATE Geosciences provided environmental testing and hazardous material testing across the campus that has sat vacant since 2008.

Carraway (original construction at this site was in 1916) was once one of the top hospitals in the Southeast but closed in 2006.  The campus continued operating as Physicians Medical Center for two more years. The property and its building structures will be demolished due to years of disrepair, vandalism and exposure to the elements, however, plans call for the existing parking decks to be used at the development.

The legendary blue star (an icon of the city on top of the hospital) is hoped to be preserved, according to Corporate Realty.
BHATE has worked at this site for decades during Carraway’s construction and renovations and we are excited to see this new project come to life!
