BHATE’s construction materials testing laboratories (Birmingham, Auburn/Opelika, Gulfport) go through rigorous evaluation to maintain accreditation with the AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL), the Concrete and Cement Reference Laboratory (CCRL) and is a validated laboratory with the US Army Corps of Engineers, ALDOT and MDOT. With dedicated personnel performing tests in accordance with ASTM or AASHTO, our engineers and technicians maintain quality by performing routine equipment verification, annual performance evaluation and participating in proficiency sample testing administered by AMRL and CCRL.  Our team is trained to perform a wide variety of soil, rock, materials and chemicals testing and work is reviewed by senior engineers who provide an internal quality assurance function.  BHATE uses state-of-the-art technology and innovative testing methods that allow us to non-destructively assess materials.

Soils and Aggregates Testing

  • Compaction testing and observation of soil, earthwork, base, backfill and rockfill placement
  • Field permeability testing
  • Californian Bearing Ratio (CBR) and plate load test (subgrade modulus)
  • Soil stabilization with lime and cement

Concrete Testing

  • Compression, flexure, and splitting tensile concrete tests
  • Concrete batch plant inspection/concrete field testing
  • Concrete reinforcing steel placement inspection
  • Floor flatness/floor levelness (FF/FL)
  • Non-destructive testing (NDT) of concrete
  • Prestressed concrete
  • Post-tension reinforcing placement inspection
  • Shrinkage testing of concrete

Masonry Testing

  • Structural masonry inspection and testing
  • Compression strength verification of concrete masonry units (CMU)
  • Compression strength verification of mortar and grout
  • Field sampling of block, prisms, grout and mortar
  • Masonry erection inspections - rebar and grout placement

Asphalt Testing

  • Asphalt placement monitoring and density testing
  • Asphalt batch plant inspection
  • Asphalt mixed design analysis

Structural Steel Testing

  • Non-destructive testing (NDT) of steel
  • Prepare and evaluate welding procedures and welder qualification
  • Steel frame joint and connector inspections (bolted & welded)
