Benjamin Russell Children’s Hospital of AL

This free-standing, $400M, 760,000 SF, 12-story pediatric hospital expansion facility was constructed on the existing Children’s of Alabama campus. The new hospital is linked to the surrounding hospital, medical buildings via four pedestrian bridges, and one under-street tunnel. BHATE provided environmental, geotechnical, tunnel design recommendations, and sinkhole remediation on this project. Geotechnical borings and subsurface geophysics studies had revealed that the rock depths below planned lower subgrade ranged from near surface to over 100’. Our detailed subsurface evaluation and site-specific foundation specifications minimized surprises and delays during construction.
