Sinkholes tend to occur in terrains underlain by carbonate rocks such as limestone below the surface, causing overlying soil or rock to collapse. States of Florida, Texas, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania are most sinkhole-prone. Annually, sinkholes cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damage to the built environment in the South Eastern U.S.
BHATE Geosciences’ engineers have geo-hazard expertise and routinely work with clients in assessing subsurface hazards that can impact site selection, new construction, and damage to existing buildings and infrastructure to create cost-effective remediation plans and conduct mitigation work. Our expertise includes:
- Design of a remedial solution for subsidence risk is based on location, extent of the hazard, proposed land use or construction, and the client’s risk preference.
- Geologic history of an area with documented/mapped failures from the 50+ years of BHATE archives, or prepared by other reliable sources such as the Geologic Survey or DOT.
- For abandoned underground coal mines, it is necessary to conduct field verification of actual below ground conditions. Many of the abandoned mines are over 100 years old and the mine maps are not always reliable.
- BHATE has prepared subsidence risk assessment and mitigation plans for sinkholes and underground abandoned coal mines for clients in several states with the objective of reducing subsidence risk for future land use.
- BHATE has the capacity, equipment, and personnel to conduct specialized drilling and grouting techniques for remedial work. Remediation efforts have included the installation of low mobility grouting for void filling and cap-grouting of sinkholes, construction of grout columns and flush grouting for abandoned underground mines.
Abandoned Underground Coal Mines
Abandoned underground coal mines number in thousands and are present in Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, and other states. Abandoned mines pose a danger to people and property because they can cause the earth to suddenly give way. Many areas with abandoned underground mines are now prime locations for commercial or industrial development.
