UAB campus presents unique subsurface challenges due to carbonate formation that have undergone significant karst activity. Lightly loaded structures can be supported on shallow foundations. Heavy structures typically require rock supported foundations. For some major buildings such as the Shelby Biomedical Research Building (340,000 SF, 12 stories), significant variations in bedrock conditions within the building footprint, a combination of drilled shafts, driven pipe piles and socketed micro piles were used. Depth of competent rock on the UAB campus can range from less than 10’ to over 120’+. We have provided geotechnical engineering and CMT services on a significant number of the buildings constructed on the campus since 1974 and have an extensive archival repository of subsurface construction information on the various structures. BHATE has been the longest serving geotechnical consultants to UAB. We also proudly fund an endowed scholarship in School of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Department. Giving back to the community is an important part of our company culture.
