50 Years of Advancing Infrastructure in the Southeast PROJECTS

Benjamin Russell New Children’s Hospital

The new hospital was constructed in an area previously occupied by older structures with many old and undocumented existing utilities. Additionally, a tunnel from the new hospital was to connect to the existing hospital across Sixth Avenue South. This street had numerous high value utilities that could not be disrupted during tunnel excavation and construction. The tunnel was to extend deeper than 20’ below the street level and would have to remain operational during construction. BHATE provided detailed utility mapping and 3-D graphics showing accurate utility locations and depth. This information was valuable to the designers and contractors to construct a H-pile and lagging shoring system and suspending/supporting the utilities across the excavation without damage.
