ALDOT Central Business District

  • ALDOT - Central Business District

Prior to commencing construction of the Central Business District I-59/I-20 through downtown Birmingham, extensive pre-design mapping of subsurface utilities was required. ALDOT retained the services of BHATE Geosciences to map all the utilities in this corridor including mapping of the boring locations where exploration would be conducted. Prior to conducting any excavation or drilling, commercial utility services had laid out and marked the utilities in the field. ALDOT required verification that these utilities were marked accurately. BHATE, using GPR and other technologies, conducted verification of marked utilities and found that at over 16% of the locations the utilities marked by other utility marking services were inaccurate and could have resulted in damage to existing underground utilities. By conducting location specific utility mapping, disruptions were avoided during field exploration and construction of the various project phases.
