FISCAL YEAR 2025 FALL DAM SAFETY FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
Grants through the Rehabilitation of High Hazard Potential Dams program are available to non-federal governments and nonprofits for the technical expertise, planning, design, and construction needed to rehabilitate eligible, non-federal, high hazard dams.
Dam safety is the art and science of ensuring the integrity and viability of dams such that they do not present unacceptable risks to the public, property, and the environment. It requires the collective application of engineering principles and experience, and a philosophy of risk management that recognizes that a dam is a structure whose safe functioning is not explicitly determined by its original design and construction.
A Dam Safety Engineer is responsible for conducting regular inspections of dams, analyzing their structural integrity, identifying potential safety issues, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations by performing detailed engineering analyses, reviewing surveillance data, and recommending necessary maintenance or repair actions to maintain the safety of dams and their appurtenant structures.
BHATE Geosciences has provided dam design and safety inspections services since 1973 when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers initially began the National Dam Inventory program. The Corps has had an active Dam Safety Program since the 1970’s. We can assist our clients with exploring funding opportunities for dam upgrades and rehabilitation.
The basic dam safety program requires the following:
- Dam owners must develop an emergency action plan and notify their local emergency management agency of any new dam construction or enlargement. The dam safety inspections must be conducted by:
- A licensed professional engineer competent in areas related to dam investigation, design, construction, and operation for the type of dam being investigated, designed, constructed, or operated.
- Understands adverse dam incidents, failures, and the potential causes and consequences of failures.
