20 Midtown Wins AIA Merit Award

20 Midtown won a 2017 Merit Award from the Birmingham Chapter of the AIA.

The first phase of the mixed-use development bridging UAB and Birmingham’s downtown City Center included a 36-unit apartment building with retail space currently occupied by Starbuck’s, Chipotle Mexican Grill and AT&T.

The second phase of 20 Midtown introduced the first Publix Super Market to downtown Birmingham along with 20 Midtown Apartments on the floors above, with an adjacent parking deck for shoppers and residents. The third block of this development will consist of retail, restaurants, parking, living, and a central courtyard green space with swimming and amenities.

Designed by Cohen Carnaggio Reynolds, the sleek design of metal panels, zinc, concrete, and stucco blends the various uses while expressing the layers of public and private spaces. The ground floor retail spurs activity on the street while hiding parking behind and above the retail. The apartments and rooftop terrace give a terrific view of the city skyline and Red Mountain.

BHATE Geosciences has provided all of the subsurface engineering, environmental and testing services on the entire 20 Midtown development.

We appreciate our relationship with the developers of 20 Midtown including RGS Properties, as well as the design/build teams of all the phases including ARD Contracting, Stewart Perry, Structural Design Group and Cohen Carnaggio Reynolds.

We are excited to see the redevelopment of our great city!
